The Power of the Mind
The mind is the part of a person that feels, perceives, thinks, wills, and senses. In other words, the human mind is the mirror of nature. The mind has such an incredible capacity that we cannot measure its power to its fullest capacity. It is sad that 90% of us neglect the power of our minds and would rather be controlled by what happens in the environment (the anything-goes phenomenon).
The mind is like a compass needle. It is the part of the human that helps us reason and make choices; thus, operating under free will means we let the mind drive us wherever it will.
Science has an argument about the location of the mind and would rather call the brain an organ of the mind.
Mindset
Mindset refers to how a person sees life. We can define it as an established set of attitudes that a person demonstrates towards culture, values, and philosophy. It is the sum of a person’s belief systems.
People often have different kinds of mindsets, including a growth mindset, a wealth mindset, a poverty mindset, a fixed mindset, an abundance mindset, and a positive mindset, among others, that form the make-up of a person’s overall mindset. There’s a popular saying that says, You are what you eat. Whatever we feed our minds with is who we eventually become.
How does God see us?
God wants us to see as Jesus sees. As God’s children, we should not breed negativity.
Philippians 2:5: Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.
We can see through God’s lenses when we establish a relationship with him. By reading his words daily, our minds become renewed.
Romans 12:2: And be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, acceptable, and perfect will of God.
Sometimes, we subconsciously build some negativity in our childhood years when we don’t get love from people we think should have loved us the most. The danger about this is that it breeds a limiting mind, as we don’t rise above our own opinions. Well, the Bible does have a remedy.
Casting down imaginations and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; 2 Cor 10:5
How does it influence people’s decisions?
The mind is responsible for the way we see the world around us. The more positive our mindset, the easier we navigate through.
Sometimes science cannot explain some healing process; even the doctors are shocked. When the mind is directed towards a desired outcome, it focuses on it and achieves that outcome. You tend to attract whatever your mind is focused on. If a person with cancer believes he can be healed, the body starts working to achieve that healing; oftentimes, they survive.
Climbing Mount Everest
The reality of success lies between a man and God. Your mind and your mouth—some requests go from your mind to heaven. Once you’re able to see and conceive it, it becomes a reality. Grow yourself first in your mind.
Our minds are the most powerful tool that nature has given us for all levels of success in life. Whatever we desire is achievable using mind power.
“Do not judge me by my successes; judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again." ~ Nelson Mandela’s
Father Abraham, in our popular Bible stories, shows us how to use our minds powerfully. God called him out of his family to an unknown land, but he still kept following. It takes a man with a positive mind to do that (Genesis 12:1–3). He didn’t let go of his intercession for the righteous in Sodom and Gomorrah, even when his requests seemed impossible. He kept asking, and God answered him because of his persistency and positivity (Genesis 18:16–33). Only optimistic people work that way.
All his life, Nelson Mandela focused on hope, unity, and a brighter future for all. His positive mindset is a reminder that even in the face of adversity, maintaining a positive outlook can fuel resilience, inspire others, and bring about transformative change. Despite his long years of incarceration, he was still committed to fighting for justice and equality. We should have this kind of endurance in the face of challenges.
Here’s Damola, who doesn’t like sports because of past experiences from secondary school, but I decided to look at it differently. This time, I participated in the Elites’ Sports Week organized by my department, and I came out with two silver medals. I realised that I have only been betraying myself by limiting the capacity of my mind.
As young believers, we should embrace the power of positivity. Jesus wants us to find joy and to stay focused on positive thoughts—heavenly ones based on eternity (Colossians 3:2). He wants His followers not to worry but to stay focused on and seek the Kingdom of God (Matthew 6:34).
